Assalto ao Trem Pagador
O Assalto ao Trem Pagador a.k.a. The Train Robbers
is a classic work of Brazilian cinema. Made in
1963 the stark black and white film tells the
story of a group of small time thieves from the
slums of Rio de Janeiro who plan and execute the
robbery of a train carrying money on it’s
way to the Bank of Brazil. Local authorities,
stumped with no real leads, begin to suspect that
an international ring of thieves committed the
crime. The leader of the gang, played by Eliezer
Gomes, makes the other thieves agree to only spend
10% of the stolen money during the first few years
in order to keep any suspicious eyes away, but
greed eventually rears it’s ugly head and
spoils the job for all of them.
Recalling the more sublime cinema to come from
places like Italy & the United Kingdom, this
film is a real precursor for crime classics like
Goodfellas and, most notably, Cidade de Deus (City
of God).
