| Appointment
with Danger
Made in 1951, this effective crime film
stars Alan Ladd in the last of his film
noir starring roles and was directed by
Lewis Allen who also directed Desert
Fury, So Evil My Love &
Chicago Deadline (which also
stars Ladd). The story concerns a special
investigator for the U.S. post office
named Al Goddard (played by Ladd) who
is assigned to collar two criminals who've
murdered a postal detective. To begin
his investigation Goddard must first locate
the only witness to the crime, a nun named
Sister Augustine (Phyllis Calvert). In
an effort to infultrate the criminals
operation, Goddard poses as a crook and
eventually gains the confidence of the
murderers' boss Earl Boettiger (Paul Stewart)
who has worked out a scheme to defraud
the post office of one million dollars.
Once they've realized the truth, the crooks
take Goddard and the nun prisoner, leading
to a fight to the finish in a lonely industrial
district. The real highlight of this film
is the fact that both Jack Webb and Harry
Morgan of Dragnet fame play the bad guys.
Webb plays an extremely vicious killer
who murders a man onscreen with a pair
of bronzed baby shoes!
